Q2005 from old to new computer

Hi: Ok, I did a dejanews before posting this so please don't shoot me if this has been covered.

I am trying to move my Q2005 files and data from my old computer to my new one. Old 'puter is a Win98SE machine and new one is WinXP Pro machine. Both computers are networked and all the data is backed up on the old machine.

The only CD I have is Q2003 because I downloaded the Q2005 update. I tried installing Q2003 then overwriting the Q2005 files to the new folder but the program doesn't load or run correctly. Q2005 on the new computer did convert the Q2003 data and it will run but some menu items don't work and it doesn't start exactly right so I believe it's a version problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I do not understand why you installed Q2003 at all. If you downloaded Q2005 to your new computer, you should be good to go, program wise. And Q2005 doesn't want other versions installed.

As far as the data is concerned, the data does not have to reside in any particular folder, but if you can point to the data from Quicken's "open" dialog, Quicken will either open it (if it is data for the version of Quicken that is running), or "convert" it (if it is data from an earlier version of Quicken). Do not try to open data from a newer version of Quicken using an older version of Quicken.

Your description of your problem using Q2005 just isn't complete enough to offer any more help. What "menu items don't work"? What happens when you try to use them? What edition of Q2005 did you purchase (Basic, Deluxe, Premiere, H&B)? What do you mean, "it doesn't start exactly right"?

I believe the situation he has described is that he is running Q2005 on his old computer which he installed from a download; he has no CD for that version (only for his old Q2003). Evidently if you don't get a CD, maybe there is no good way to download Quicken a second time if to need to intall it on your new computer. [Maybe there is a download file somewhere on the old computer that he can use to re-install it on the new computer].

Seems to me that this would be a fairly common problem for Quicken users that have no installation CD and must be something that can be answered by Intuit.

AFAIK, Intuit allows users to download a purchased version multiple times. I't alwys intrigues me that people would download software and not save the installation files on CD.

Or to remember to save the installation serial number that they received in an e-mail.

Special folder in my mail program is "Passwords and Registrations" ;)

Mines called "Codes&memberships". For some programs I have saved the serial number to a txt file and is stored in the same folder as the install exe. All have been burned to a DVD too for safekeeping. Been through one failed hard drive too many. ;-)

I download Quicken every year. In Canada they have a subscription program called Quicken Advantage. Every year I receive a mailing telling me that the new version is available and providing me with an Installation key code and customer number. In the download instructions you are advised to save your downloaded copy to CD (which of course is only common sense).

Assuming Drumstick has some form of proof of purchase, I am sure a simple phone call to Intuit explaining his dilemma would solve the problem.
