new computer - can't update

I tried to update QBPro2003 on my new machine. It downloaded the maintenance updates, but when I tried to install them it got to 47% and stopped, saying that qbm3t2.dat was the wrong version and to reinstall Quickbooks and try again. What good would it do to reinstall? I would be reinstalling the same files. Am I stuck until I buy 2005? I was gonna wait for 2006.

The main reason I wanted to update is that on the earnings report, employee SSNs are displayed. I recall this was the case when I first bought 2003, but an update fixed it.

Did you use QB's software update or did you do it manually?

Try throwing away the update files. Download them again. Possibly they are corrupt. Also don't use the multi-user update. Do the update manually.

From the "File" menu I clicked "Update Quickbooks."

I'll try downloading it again. I don't see any point reinstalling QB, since I would be reinstalling the same .dat file.

How do I get rid of the update files in order to download them again? Not using multi-user. I'm not exactly sure what you mean: "Do the update manually."

Nothing else seemed to work so I broke down and reinstalled QB. Same shit! It got stuck at 47%, just like before, saying that qbm3t2.dat was the wrong version and suggesting I reinstall Quickbooks. Well I just reinstalled, dammit!

Is it a coincidence that the first screen that pops up after the failed install is an ad to buy QB2005?!? Do they have me right where they want me?!?

Would be advisable or a really stupid idea to copy qbm3t2.dat from the old computer (which has a properly updated QuickBooks) to the new computer?

Yes you hit the nail on the head. Intuit do it, just to get more money from you.

At this point what have you go to lose? Rename the bad file to qbm3t2.old (or something like that) to save it in case you need to restore it.

When you reinstalled QB did you uninstall the program first? Did you reboot in between uninstalling/reinstalling?

Preferences, man, preferences.

There is an auto update preference. There is a everybody use the same location for D/L preference. And that will tell you where (full path) the updates are being downloaded to. C:program files/intuit/quickbooks/updates or some such.

I see you went the step of re-installing QB and it failed as expected. If you didn't delete the update files it tried to use the corrupt one again.

You may have to wait till Monday to call QB support and play like you are a new user and can't get it to install. Be firm, make them stay on the line, and keep asking for a supervisor when what they tell you to do doesn't work. Eventually you'll get to a USA rep and they will know how to get you going.

Damn, Allan. Stop teasing the newbies.

Not teasing just angry. How in the world can they come to the conclusion that the inability to install the program is a deliberate attempt by Intuit to force an upgrade? I am a QB fan and will defend Intuit when unjust remarks are made against them.

Its such a pity that so many people are of the misconception that the support for the product (or any other product) is somehow inferior when given by someone outside of the USA.

The debate on the benefits/harm caused by outsourcing is one thing but if we continue to delude ourselves into believing that these individuals are not highly educated, trained motivated and can get the job done, then we are in big trouble.

Don't believe me, then continue on you merry way and keep jerking yourself off/around with those thoughts. I will have the last laugh when you can't use your wrist for flipping those burgers.

Well, gotta agree with you there. The OP made an unfair assumption. Let's hope they didn't take your seriously tho.

Then you agree, I am witty. Thank you very much.

OK, I've only used QB for four years so I suppose I am new. Since you have vast experience, how about taking a stab at my question: "Would be advisable or a really stupid idea to copy qbm3t2.dat from the old computer (which has a properly updated QuickBooks) to the new computer?"

I asked before I looked. I ditched the update before trying to update again.

The "bad" file came from the installation disk, not from the update.

I don't care if I get help from Mars, if it helps. The first two years I used QB I subscribed to "Unlimited" toll free help. The accuracy rate of information was about 50%.

From what I've observed of your sense of humor, I believe you would get a good laugh.
