I should have better asked: can Windows XP open it natively like it can open "standard" zip files?

I've been using "Advanced Windows Care" from IOBIT.com . It's free and replaces AdAware and Spybot.
I'm with you on this. If I like a product, I pay for it.
IZArch for me (although I also bought Winzip years ago). I find the interface more polished than 7zip. Tons of formats supported.

And just to throw another one in there, I've used ZipGenius6 on accassion. It is free and seems to be compatible with WinZip.
