Quicken is it, nothing else even begins to come close. I've tried most Windows and Linux alternatives and found them all lacking and all failed to import properly.
Like it or not, we're stuck with Quicken.
I suggest you give each of the above a try, Moneydance (I think?) used to have a trial, don't know about the others.
Gnucash for Windows.
There is a steep learning curve learning how to use it. Gnucash investment tracking is usable, but not as complete as Quicken. IMO, the designers believe that "investment" means the kind of things a young techie does in day trading.
For checking accounts, credit cards, and household finances it's ok.
I used it for several years under Linux and Windows, and eventually gave up when I couldn't adjust cost basis for a spinoff, and nobody on the Gnucash mailing list could advise me.
My experience is that it failed to import Quicken files properly.
So far, I haven't found anything that will w/o making a complete hash of everything. In Gnucash it was actually easier and faster to enter everything manually rather than try to repair the mess it made of the import and since I have multiple accounts going back 20+ years (as do many here, I suspect!) I gave up on Gnucash and all other Quicken alternatives that claim to be able to import but can't really do so.
I tried iBank, Money and Moneydance trials. Non really worked for me. The closest was Moneydance, but it's also the ugliest by some distance.
Nope, I'm running Quicken 2011 in a Windows vm at the moment - works best for me.
Cheers, Ian
I didn't realize that. I just started Gnucash first by making up a "chart of accounts" per the user's guide, then started Gnucash from the beginning of the year, fresh, and manually entered transactions.
I guess my needs are pretty simple.
So, another strike against Gnucash.
