Quicken Deluxe 2006 with Vista?

I just received a new computer with Vista. It arrived yesterday, so I have one day of "experience" with Vista. I apologize if I posted a similar message, but I still can't get Vista to search correctly even for my own messages.

I am using Quicken Deluxe 2006. Has anyone tried it with Vista, and does it seem to be fully compatible? I use Quicken only for my checkbook and not for entering online transactions.

Thanks, MaryL

This is a complicated issue that's off-topic for this group. Try Googleing "Windows Vista searching and indexing" or posting this question to a Vista newsgroup.

My Vista search broke on me too. With much effort I was able to get it working again. Here's what I learned and did, but there's a lot more that can go wrong. Hopefully I won't get flamed for being off-topic.

How search works depends on (1) what search box you're using, (2) what search options are in effect for that search box and (3) what drives, folders and file types are being indexed.

(1) There are search boxes for Quicken, the Vista Start menu, the Vista Search command, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, the Google Desktop Sidebar, etc. If you post to a Vista group tell them which one you are using.

(2) Left-click the Windows logo in the lower left corner of your screen. The Start menu search box appears immediately above the logo. Right-click the Windows logo then left-click Properties, select the "Start menu" radio button, then click "Customize". Scroll down the option list to "Search" and make sure it and all other "Search ..." options are checked and that "Search entire index" is selected. Then click the OK button.

Then open any Windows Explorer window and click "Organize", then "Folder and Search Options", then the "Search" tab. Make a note of the current settings, then click "Restore Defaults" then "OK".

(3) Now see if the Start menu search is working. If not, your indexing may be turned off or messed up. A Dell tech rep told me that Norton Internet Security turns off your indexing service but I can't confirm or deny this.

Indexing Options is under System and Maintenance in the Control Panel. You should have at least "Start Menu" and "Users default" under indexed locations. Make a note of the current settings then click "Advanced" then "Restore Defaults", then "Rebuild" to rebuild your index.

If you're still not seeing your newsgroup posts, make sure they're still on your computer. If you're using Windows Mail make sure they're in your Sent Items folder [see Tools -> Options... -> Send tab -> Save copy of sent messages in the 'Sent Items' folder]. In addition you may want to check "Cleaning Up Messages" under Tools -> Options... -> Advanced tab ->

Maintenance and increase the number of days downloaded news messages are retained.

I've only been using Vista for 2 months myself so you may want to review some of the Googled articles before you blindly follow my above advice.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much! I was primarily trying to learn if Quicken Deluxe 2006 was compatible with Vista, but I was happy to get the information you provided. Incidentally, there was one are where I apparently was not clear. The problem was that search *is* including all my newsgroup messages whereas I only wanted to search documents that were actually stored on my computer.

Thanks, again, for taking the time to provide so much information. MaryL
