Register Action ID

Using Q2005 HB. Savings account register's 2nd column (Num) has dropdown arrow that permits selection from 5 options... transfer (TXFR) being one.

I had a money market account I've been carrying as an Asset account for years and decided to put it where it belongs; Cash Flow Center as a Saving account. (I really don't know what benefit this brings other than comfort knowing it's technically in the "right" place. Maybe some report will group it with another when it prints.)

I made the mechanical transfer and all appears well... except for that 2nd column; it remained blank. I then reconciled a statement and allowed the wizard to post interest. That too went well .... except for that 2nd column which remained empty.

I guess I've not paid much attention in the past whether or not this column should fill in automatically. I t should know the direction of flow from where I put the amount and it should know what to choose for that column since I designate the category in another cell.

Q1) These supposed to pop up automatically? Q2) If not, how does my selection of one of those 5 choices affect anything other than that column? I don't see its importance other than service as a quick reference to an action that doesn't occur often or to ID a check number.

1) In my Money Market/Savings register the second column works just like the one in the checking registers. A Drop Down list that auto completes with the typing of initial letters

2) Only thing that this column does for you is allow filtering for specific types of transactions, such as "DEP", INT", "TXFR", "Oxfr", and so on.

Good luck with Q

I think if you check, you will find that the only account types that offer drop down lists in the Num field are checking, savings and investment accounts (ignoring H&B). And I think you have just shown that moving an account from one Quicken account group to another, does not change its underlying account type, it just gives you "comfort knowing it's technically in the 'right' place".

But the Quicken default options that appear in the drop down lists definitely offer something (you can decide how much it's worth); if you are entering a new transaction and you do not have a Memorized Payee that is overriding the effect of the Num column choice, you may notice that other aspects of transaction entry change to reflect that choice. If you choose "DEP" (for deposit) for example, the cursor will tab to the "Deposit" amount field, skipping the "Payment" field. If you chose "TXFR", the Category field description will switch from "Category" to "Xfer Acct", and the resulting drop down will only contain [Account] categories.
