TTax - stocks, buy/sell different lots

I'll have to drag out my Schwab papers, but was thinking about stock sales... and how they are reported...

Since the 1040 schedule just has a date & cost basis, how do you report or list multiple buys, and one final sale of a stock ? Single line, or multiple lines for each lot ?

ie -

2008 - buy 100 @ $50 2009 - buy 100 @ $75 2012 - sell 200 @ $100

Cost basis = $12,500 Sell = $20,000

Hi, ps56k.

In this case, it won't matter. Since your newest shares were bought in

2009, your sale in 2012 will be long-term (held more than one year), so the whole 200 shares can be reported on a single line. Or on multiple lines: It's your choice. If any of your shares had been sold for less than their cost, it MIGHT make a clearer picture to report that sale on a separate line. But you had gains on both lots, so we're talking only a cosmetic difference, with no effect on either the amount or the classification of your gains.

If your multiple lots had included both long-term and short-term gains or losses, my answer would be different.

My usual caveat: I've been retired for more than 20 years, so check with your own CPA or other competent tax adviser to be sure that my advice is correct.

As noted, your example reflects long term gains. TTax accepts the word "various" in the buy date for instances like this. You can enter these on a single line noting buy date "various" sale date xx/xx/12.
