TurboTax files

If I save a copy of my tax prep files on a thumb drive or other means then want/need to open them sometime next year or later, after I've upgraded to the 2015 version of Turbo Tax, how can I open these older files? Will they open in later versions of Turbo Tax and let me review without editing them? Gordon

Each yearly version of TT is unique - with the file "suffix" different each year. You will need to retain each yearly version of TT to be able to open that year's tax file.

Also - it would be wise the put a password on your "portable" TT file.

However - if you just want to "view" the resulting 1040 forms, after you have totally completed your 1040 for the year, you can print the entire detailed tax report to a PDF file.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. I guess all I really7 need to do is print the PDF file and keep it in a safe place until I'm sure I won't be needing to look up any of this tax information. I suppose I could save the Turbo Tax file on a thumb drive or otherwise then if I need to I could reinstall my Turbo Tax software from the box copy I have of it. Gordon

For me personally - disk space is cheap compared to the usefulness of TT So - I keep all my installed versions... I think I have back to 2009. (then I have to fire up the old Win95 machine)

I have a full USB disk backup of my current system, plus a few portable copies of Quicken files..... my investing lifeline.

This caught me by surprise. I thought the old versions and the new versions probably used some of the same file folder names and memory storage addresses and things like that and would stumble over each other if both were kept active on one computer. Gordon

they were thinking ahead... all progs are installed in the usual place for XP, /program files/ but within a different file folder (sub-dir) each year. /basic 2009/ttax.exe /basic 2010/ttax.exe /basic 2011/ttax.exe

I have a full USB disk backup of my current system, plus a few portable copies of Quicken files..... my investing lifeline. ===========================================FWIW, I have my Taxcut installations on a Vista-64 box going back to Ty 2000. Each remains as a the separate install and I can run run them individually. Until I broke it I had TC installed back to TY 1995 on an XP box. If have the pdf's going back to 1995. Since space has pretty much long not been an issue, and from the outset, I've never bothered un-installing a Taxcut version. As each is installed in its own path why bother. I do, of course, have all of the usual internal and external backups and pdf copies and I also make sure I d/l and save each update (state[s] & federal). That way (provided appropriate hardware architecture is available) I can resurrect an install if I need it or want it. YMMV. Geo.

A few years back, it used to be the case that TurboTax uninstalled the old tax program while reinstalling the new. But that is no longer the case.

I have been meticulous in saving the .pdf (the ENTIRE full print version) on the harddrive to be able to search and scan for items later on electronically, and only printing off the filed copied for paper records.
