Using Quicken in overseas currency

I have Quicken 2005 installed on my laptop (Australia) and plan to take the laptop with me on a trip to Europe. Is there any simple way to enter the transactions I do (Visa, bank account) in Euros that can then be converted to Aussie dollars using a conversion factor? Or do I just convert on the fly. Anyone else done this? Pete

Not that I know of. Even if there were, the conversion factor would vary from day to day and a single conversion wouldn't work.

What I always do is approximate the amount in my local currency, put the Euro amount in the "memo" field, then change the amount to the accurate one when I get my credit card statement.

In Canadian Quicken, you enter, for example, 114.00e, and it converts instantly to your home currency. It even creates a memo entry (EU114.00) so you know the native currency.

It will depend on whether the Australian version has this feature, but it's worth a try.

One may need to enable "multi-currency support" in edit/preferences (or whatever is called in Quicken, as I'm at work and can't check).

Thanks Fred.....brilliant, works for the Aus version, exactly what I needed. I knoew the conversion may vary, but it gives me some idea of expenditure, I'll just correct it when the statement arrives

Don't know if the Aus Quicken has this, but in the UK version there is a Currency list that has conversions against your nominated Home currency. The list is editable and IIRC has around 22 world currencies listed. The rates get updated during online updates. You can allocate a letter to currencies you wish to use, ie "E" for Euros and when you make a Euro transaction type in the Euro amount but before entering it press "Shift E". This makes Quicken use the conversion and you end up with a "est" for estimated in the num field, an estimated value of your home currency in the payment / deposit field and the actual euro amount in the memo field. Once you find out the exact cost it is easy to change the amount as it is not tied to the calculation. It works fairly well but can only be a guide. The good thing is it preserves the original cost so you always see what that was. It also works with manually setup currencies too, I added Thai Baht to the list for holiday and manually aded the rate. Quicken just used it as and when I told it to with no probs. Like I said, don't know if this funcionality is in your version.

I agree. I use it all the time. I know it isn't accurate to the penny, but it's close enough until the next download. It means you always have a good idea what the balance in the account is, and your budget is still accurate.

Yes Al It's there and it works well. Currency rates download nicely too. Pete
