I screwed up. I filed my 2012 return MFS and received a refund of about $1700. But when I went to figure out my wife's taxes I realized that by filing jointly we could save more than $8000. This all due to my total naivety about rental property. She hasn't filed. Can I amend my return and add her?

No problem. As you already received a refund, the only way you can accomplish what you want is by amending your tax return.
Yes, your election to file MFS can be revoked. It's the other way around that give the IRS heartburn...
