E-file rejection

I filed my 2011 return by mail, but I inadvertently put down my wife's last name incorrectly. When I try to e-file my 2012 return, the IRS rejects it due to an AGI mismatch. I tried the web site to get a filing PIN for my wife, but the web site says to call the IRS.

So I called and spent 40 minutes of my life talking to the IRS on the telephone. No one could figure it out. They kept forwarding me around and finally hung up on me.

Is there any hope of sorting this out or should I just file by mail again and pray that it works next year?

You may have to file a paper return for 2012.
