How do I prove the claimed dependent lived w/me

Mar 06, 2009 3 Replies

I claimed my grandson (who met the dependent requirements) but the IRS says someone else claimed him. My son is the "custodial" parent as far as mother and father are concerned and I can have him sign the release form (833?) but the IRS person I talked to said they want proof he was with me (she said a letter from someone like a doctor). He was not school age yet and did not have a regular doctor. What can I submit as proof?

There has to be something with his name on it that shows your address as his home. School records, medical records, day care records.....something. Did you register him someplace? That may be sufficient. The more things you have that point to your home being his residence the better.

Would a sworn signed affidavit from a next-door neighbor or two be helpful??

Sure it is. But that alone may not be sufficient.
