How do you get the IRS to tell you what was changed after you filed?

I ordered a transcript from the IRS to try to figure out why they changed my Schedule H (before I figured it out myself).

The transcript arrived today. It says on the cover letter, "The transcript, however, does not contain changes made to the return, by either you or us, after you filed the return. Such changes could include your filing an amended return, corrections we make to the return...."

Great. So how, exactly, does a taxpayer get the IRS to tell him what changes were made after a return was filed, and why? Is there some other transcript I should have ordered instead of this one? Or is what I'm looking for, i.e., a simple, straightforward explanation of the changes to my return over time, something that the IRS is simply incapable of providing?

Jon,

You ordered a Return Transcript, which does not contain 1040X information.

In addition you should order an Account Transcript, and it wouldn't hurt to also order a Record of Account. Takes slightly longer but will provide changes to your account after the originally filed return.

As far as I can tell, an Account Transcript can be ordered over the Web

or over the phone, but a Record of Account can only beordered by sending the IRS Form 4506-T. Is that correct?
