My neighbor had has refund reduced by $200. He said he never received a letter explaining why.
Is there a way to find out why on the internet?

How was his tax return prepared and filed? Did he have tax preparation fees, tax software fees, or any other payments deducted from his refund?
If he used a paid tax preparer, he should ask the preparer about the reduced refund.

He self prepared with Turbo Tax, would Turbo have an answer?

He should start by getting his IRS tax transcript. He can do it online here if the IRS can verify who he is.

Tks John, after talking to him some more, he said it might be a duplicate 1099R he received. Didn't include it on the return. Maybe IRS just added it. Who knows....I told him to check with IRA folks first and see if it is truly a duplicate and then go from there.
