Is everything ok ?? (2023 Update)

I have not seen any new posts in this newsgroup for a couple of weeks. Just checking to see if everything is ok.

I am using the news server at news.aioe.org - I looked on their website just now and don't see any information that they are having problems.

And, maybe it is just a slow time for posting?

Thanks Cathy H Ellsworth KS

========================================= MODERATOR'S COMMENT: Everything is OK as far as I'm aware. There used to be many posts here, and that's decreased to a trickle the last few years. It does pick up a bit closer to April 15.

This newsgroup is moderated and as far as I know there is only one moderator so depending on your timezone things get delayed before the post is approved for publishing.

I think this newsgroup has many experts, and all the possible tax questions have been answered already. LOL.

========================================= MODERATOR'S COMMENT: There are many types of tax, and types of tax issues. Someone may be an expert in one but not another, and even the experts sometimes ask questions here.

The fact that you're getting responses to your message shows that the newsgroup is up and running. But the truth is that Usenet use has declined a lot over the years and will continue to do so. It's an older, text-based technology, and most younger users have never heard of it and will never use it. As the population ages, Usenet will continue to fade in importance and probably eventually disappear completely. Every Usenet group I've been a part of has continuously shown fewer users the last several years, and many have groups now have only a few or even zero participants.

It's a matter of presentation.

If there were decent Usenet clients for Android and iPhone, more people would use it. Usenet, for all its warts, is one of the last mediums of free uncensored speech. It shouldn't be allowed to wither away.

I've never used google groups. Are you saying that doesn't work well?

The Web interface is awful and the Usenet articles Google produces are not conventional and sometimes not standards-compliant. Google uses the same term "Google Groups" for newsgroups and mailing lists. The mailing lists are not Usenet in any way.

As far as the archive of Usenet articles, Google has allowed that to whither away. The indexing broke over a decade ago so it's very difficult to tell if any archiving takes place. Google devotes a negligible amount of staff time to it, if any.

I've only ever tried one iPhone Usenet app, and that one is called NewsTap Lite. It's not terrible and it will get the job done, but it's not great either. I've used it when I was away from my computer for an extended period and only had my iPhone handy.
