RE:Direct Deposit to Checking/Savings

I see that both Fed and CA forms only ask for routing and account numbers, not name. My son 'should' be ok, but I still want to be sure. My question still remains.

Thanks.

There is no tax law or rule that prevents requesting direct deposit to an account you do not own. It is highly likely that the bank will reject the transfer as part of its fraud detection system. The only way to know for sure is to ask your bank.

The 1040 instructions are clear that the "Account must be in your name". Whether the IRS verifies this and/or your bank would accept the deposit is something I don't know.

The easiest solution is to have your son get a prepaid debit card and use the routing and account number asociated with it.
