For some very strange values of "fun" :-)

(mmm, I'll sit there waiting for an enormous download, that's a good use of my time...)

If you can persuade somebody to sell it to me, then please do. I'll even pay you money to do so! (ok, probably not enough to pay for a fixed line though...)

beats reading GG's posts...

Did you know that in some ways IE6 is worse than 5.5? I have to program with the damn thing for a living...

In general what percentage of websites work with only a few operating systems such as IE?

If you stick to a certain language, such as HTML, can you therefore ensure that your website will be compatable with all website browsers?

s/operating systems/browsers

Dunno. I use a sufficiently recent version of IE :-)

Of course it may be coincidence that sites where the writers have taken care to make them work with more than one browser are also those which are well written in other ways.

If I were writing a publicly accessible website, and it didn't run on browser 'X', I would consider this a bug. And I don't like bugs. Comes of taking pride in my work.

So how exactly does this disability act have a bearing upon websites?

Reply to

Without going into too much detail how can someone do that? This is a nice idea, but really it is the first time I had heard of this.

I seem to remember that, At one stage he was offering himself out as an international business consultant.

I agree, if anything is worth doing, it should be worth doing properly. I use opera, as I like off the wall niche things. I find quite often websites don't work with this browser. Particularly when in conjunction with ...java technology.

Oh well, IE 7 will be along soon!

The Disability Discrimination Act aims to end the discrimination which many disabled people face. This Act gives disabled people rights in the areas of:

employment access to goods, facilities and services buying or renting land or property.

"access to goods, facilities and services " relates to websites.

ROFL, I like your quip about files getting "unzipped" that rocked my boat.

HTML is not considered a language is it?

what part of Hyper Text Markup Language implies it is not a machine language?

That might be true, but I have read that it is not considered a language, in the same way that "basic" or "cobalt" is a computer programming language. I am not the authority on this definition. Perhaps you are, or someone else is?

Ok I'll try to sell it to you- how long do you spend online? Do other people struggle to get through to you on the phone?

We had an all you can eat package with Freeserve at around 14.99 per month. No-one could ever get through on the phone and it was driving our respective families mad. My sister-in-law left a message on our answering machine one day saying 'I want to book a phonecall tonight between 8.30 and 9pm. Please don't go on the internet then.'

We were also trying to connect more than one computer to the internet through a single dial-up account, which worked ok sometimes, but could also be very painful.

Another line would have cost around 100 plus 8 per month, but we eventually went to ADSL with Pipex for 23.99 per month. What a difference in speed! We have 3 computers online, which is still much quicker than a single one on dial-up. We can also surf and phone at the same time, which has kept the family happy. So all-in-all this has been a great deal for us. This is a great site for all things about ADSL.

The message boards are good for asking questions.

So have I persuaded you? cos I can get a month free if I refer a friend!

Your mileage may vary of course, what works for one person doesn't work for another, you also need to be on an enabled exchange.

I think he meant persuade someone to *supply* it rather than convince him that it would be something he needed. ;-)

Mail order condoms :)

But seriously, one can make money selling something off a website without conventional promotion, at a very low level of sales which may nevertheless be satisfactory to an individual sitting at home.
