Average Price of UK website designed?

Let's get back to the original context; this IIRC was a "small businessman" who may well want to run a site in some ISP's free webspace. Most of them won't let you run any such code on their server. Not even the most trivial, e.g. password protecting a page.

I never said a "good accountant", I said a "good consultant" with regards to web design. And to be honest I don't know if you'd know they are good. The end result may show to others how good they were though....

I agree you can do a lot with HTML, but I wouldn't use Javascript (I turn it off generally for example and screen readers won't use it therefore you can fall fowl of the DDA).

PHP & SQL really aren't such "serious" technologoies when you get to know them ;-)

If you stick to basic HTML yes, if you try to employ layout tricks to make a nice looking site you are in for a lot of testing.

Yes, it is an interpreted layout language. Another example would be Postscript.

Sometimes simplicity can be the best design tool, in fact, this is a concept used in the design of many scuccessful products. The old style landrover, "pure simplicity" was one of its features, you could fix it, repair it almost anywhere, I even remember hearing stories of someone making a "wooden piston for one" in the war. The less things that can go wrong, the less things will go wrong. That is a design falt that people over look.

For example....I have a mercedes that is x years old, if you look at some other cars that are from that same year, if they have sundry electronic gadgets, you will often find that those electronic gadgets don't work, such as electric windows, etc.etc. they fail with time, but with my old merc, the windows are traditional wind up windows, the tachometer is a mechanical one, everything is having a solid knob to twist or pull, and it is still as in as good nick as the day it was made...(almost)

Bob, if you are a computer expert in languages, then I can't argue with you, I have read books that referred to HTML as not strictly a programming language. So I have learnt something then..new.I have not enough knowledge to clearly know this answer.

When I get enquiries for the larger, websites that I am not interested to immediately look at, do you do this kind of work at all? I shall simply refer the work to people who are seeking that particular type of website. I want to specialise in certain sizes for all kinds of reasons....so thats why for the initial period I'm not even going to look at the larger corporate websites..but I'll most likely get interested enquiries.

I agree with you - didn't that surprise you!

I have a car with electric windows and one with manual windows and it shocks me everytime I have to wind the window. I dont get excited about cars so I am quite happy with buying a car a couple of years old and keeping it for four years. I also have a very good friend who can be trusted to repair cars without ripping you off but he doesnt have a lot of equipment so I would prefer to keep things simple too.

I also have someone who I trust who deals with my computers

My wife knows plumbers, electricians and builders from the Polish community.

I hate the hassle that we get from big business and I avoid it as much as possible.

I have quite a few clients who are web site designers and I can say that you are wasting your time with your 99 pound a website offer. Anyone who has any ability is not going to design a website for 99 pounds. You will just be working hard for no worthwhile income. Why dont you offer to do a few free websites for charities and then market yourself around 400 or 500 pounds a website?

If someone was using IE4 and found that there were problems wouldnt they upgrade? I suppose you are saying that they dont know there's problems or they dont know it could be avoided by upgrading.

Hmmm now everyone can see why I was so successful as an insurance salesman- sorry financial adviser!

I found lots of people who wanted to get insurance, but couldn't get through underwriting. Some of my colleagues had an unerring radar which told them when a small case wasn't worth bothering with- whereas I would spend weeks fighting our own company on behalf of someone who pleaded with me to help them.
