Best way to pay Euros into my UK account?

We have about 500 Euros in cash after a holiday (it's a returned deposit so there wasn't any easy way to use it up over there). While we normally keep amounts of up to a hundred or so for the next time this seems a bit much to keep in cash.

What's the best way of turning it back into sterling in our UK bank? We have a choice of HSBC, Nationwide or even possibly Abbey. My guess would be just to pay it over the counter at Nationwide but I'm willing to be told otherwise.

Go into each of the three on the same day and ask how many pounds will end up in your account.

yes, its cash after all so it should be done there and then.

You're likely to lose around 5% of it whichever of those you choose.

Personally I'd just keep it - even if you're not going to Eurozone yourself again for a while, there's bound to be a friend/relative/colleage who is and would be delighted to do an exchange at the interbank rate.
