burtons store card

My son now 18 yrs went to buy some goods and used his new debit card for the first time. He was offered a ten % discount if he signed up for the stores discount card. They swiped his debit card, and he thought he had paid. In fact they had charged him onto a store card, and we did not know this until the bill came some weeks later. This trickery makes me sick. Is there a means of complaint? poppy

It's not clear what you're complaining about.

Presumably they didn't swipe his debit card otherwise the charge would have appeared on his bank statement, and it doesn't appear from the posting that you're complaining about double charging.

They may have asked to have a look at his debit card, and record the details as part of the checking procedure for the issue of a store card, but if that's the system for obtaining a store card and a 10% discount, then why complain now?

Presumably your son was happy to accept the 10% discount plus the interest free credit period which he will have, provided he pays before the due date on his store card statement.

Your son is financially better off because of this transaction, so what 'trickery' do you believe has taken place?

You may be sceptical. I, however, would like to know what happened. It is becoming so evident that almost everyone employed in the financial services industry may be assumed to be a crook, unless proven otherwise, that I believe nothing they say. Where has British honour gone? Into the water closet, I fear.

I would think they took a swipe of his debit card and got an authorisation for the value of the purchase, when the authorisation came through they completed the application for their in house card from the details he gave them. They then reversed the authorisation and processed the transaction on the new in house card account.

Indeed I had to entertain some visitors from Holland last month and found myself telling them that nowadays whenever the Government says something you can generally take it they are lying.

Did he actually sign an agreement? He must have done, otherwise he wouldnt have got a store card would he, you dont get a store card by swiping a debit card!!. So, what did he think all that form filling was about? he should pay more attention to what he is signing, a very valuable lesson, for which the store paid him 10%!

So, no harm done, he's got his 10% off , pay the bill in full, then cancel the card.

Let's get this right: he signs up for a store card, they debit the amount onto the store card, and you want to complain?

So pay the store card bill, destroy the store card, close the account, and fuggeddaboutit. And do it ASAP, 'cos the interest rates on Burton cards are, to put it mildly, larcenous.

It's not a question of being sceptical. You were claiming 'trickery' which I totally failed to see on your original posting.

Now how about addressing the points I made and explaining why you think Burton's were involved in trickery. All I can see at the moment is that your son wanted to buy something. They said if you take out our store card we'll give you 10% off. He said OK. In order to provide some sort of evidence, which is a quite normal proicedure, they asked to see his debit card and probably made a note of the details. You or your son thought - wrongly I would suggest - that they were swiping it in order to take a payment. Nothing in your OP says they have charged that debit card, so where's the problem?

Without a hint of irony, Jon S Green astounded uk.finance on 18 Jul 2004 by announcing:

Or rather, ask your son to do this if it's what he wants to do.

Yeah, I was addressing both. Sorry it wasn't obvious.

I kind of had the same experience in the same store. They asked me if I wanted to sign up for a store card to get 10% discount. I was under the impression that I could sign up for this card and still put it on my Switch card but they wouldn't let me do that. I refused to let them put it on my store card but unfortunatly I was stuck with a card I had just signed up for and I didn't get my 10% discount.

When she was pursuading me to sign up for the card I asked if I would get 10% discount on future purchases, "Yes" she replied, bitch.

Like you I also wish there was some way of complaining because I feel that there is a lot of trickery going on but unfortunatly they do give you a form to sign and saying that if you read the small print you'd be holding up a queue of 10 people wouldn't be an acceptable excuse. :)

There are sometimes promotions for cardholders which give 10% off so perhaps she was referring to these.
