I was offered and accepted an mbna zero per cent credit card loan of 9500 pounds, the only charge was an initial set up fee of 50 pounds, the zero rate time 6 months. As each statement came in, I paid off more than the minimum, when a statement came in saying that the next statement would carry interest, I repaid the total owed straight away. I was very surprised that the next statement had an interest amount of just over 37 pounds. I phoned and queried this and was told that the interest free time expired one week before my payment was actually credited to my account. Since there was no mention at any time of an exact date that the interest free payment ended I asked that the interest be refunded, in quite a rude way I was told that I should have worked out the dates that the zero per cent deal finished. I then asked to close the account, I was told that I must pay up the outstanding balance first, although I offered to pay by debit card immediately over the phone that was rejected as a way of paying, I went to the mbna website and paid the total owed. I re-phoned mbna and asked to close my account, they transferred me to customer retention who offered me half the interest back rather than close the account, I rejected that and asked that the account be closed if they would not credit the whole of the interest charged, they reluctantly agreed to close the account, I then asked to close my other MBNA credit card, and that was also done, I then asked to close my business mbna card, I had to be transferred to business section and they agreed to close that account as well, during all this I was looking through my accounts and had realised there was another mbna credit card account, so I asked to be transferred back to the domestic side, a different person took the call (the fifth different person) I explained the position yet again and asked to close the last account, he immediately and with no hesitation refunded the interest !!! So I left that account open!
Why the hell couldn't I have spoken to him first? Even customer retention had refused to refund all the interest.
So all my accounts are closed bar one (zero balance), another one, although closed, has a credit balance. I am very unlikely to use MBNA for anything again.
I intend sending the above to head office for their comments.
