Unauthorized charges to credit card

I have recently had a couple of items appear on my credit card (RBOS M/C) which I had not purchased. It appears that these were mail order items, and I suspect that it was probably an error rather than a criminal act, but I just wonder with all the checks in place why this still can happen?

One problem I have though is that although my account has been refunded with one of these charges (by the company who made the charge), the refund was applied after my statement closed. When I asked customer services if I could just pay my statement balance less the disputed amount (about £100) they said that if I did this I would pay interest on the whole statement closing balance, even though the refund is already showing on my next months account. They did say they would refund the interest, but I'm not very happy about this. Is this normal practice in a case like this?

Not when it happened to me. The amount "in dispute" remained on my statement for about 3 months while they sorted it out, but they suspended charging any interest on it, and didn't require any minimum payment when the disputed amount was the only thing on my statement.

Thats very different, because in your case you went through the cc company. Thats happened to me several times too, in which case the amount in question is put 'in suspense' and doesn't count as part of your bill until the matter is resolved.

BUT...in the OPs case, he went via the original charging company and got a refund to his account, there is no amount in dispute because the matter has been resolved, so as far as the CC company is concerned, nothing extraordinary has occurred (there is no amount in the suspense account), so his bill is perfectly normal.

Just to say I didn't contact the charging company, I contacted RBOS customer services and told them that the charge had not been authorised. They said they would send me a form to fill-in with the details of the disputed charge (still waiting for it to arrive). They advised me to contact the company and ask them to arrange a refund, and that if this was not forthcoming they would take things up on my behalf. I did try to contact the company, but found that their phone line was constantly engaged.

About 3 days after I spoke to RBOS a credit appeared on my account for the disputed amount. I am assuming that this was probably because the company that made the incorrect charge had noticed and was sorting it out.

Same effect, the charging company noticed and withdrew the charge and as you havent filled the form in, the item isnt in dispute (though you can get them to put an item in dispute before the form is filled in but they still want you to send you one back as a confirmation).

One of the last disputes i had, a restaurant in SPain charged me 4 times the exact same amount a few seconds apart. When I called RBOS they first asked me if I could contact the restaurant to try and sort it out (hah!) and only then did they agree to put the amount in dispute, but they still sent me a form.
