Problems finding out the truth why a transfer was reversed

A client transferred money from Italy. On the same day my bank account was debited with the same amount but without any details.

I phoned my bank and asked if the debit related to the credit. I was told it was. I asked why it was reversed and I was told because the other bank recalled the payment.

I told my client and he contacted his bank and they told my client this was not the case. They say the problem was with my bank.

I phoned my bank and I was told that when I asked previously they didn't have the information available and that is usually the reason for these reversals. I said I didn't ask for the usual reason.

The bank now says that the details sent by the other bank were incomplete. I have asked what the incomplete information was. The people who are supposed to know that are not answering the phone.

The call centre couldn't get through to the complaints people, either

- communications problems, I'm told.

I am now waiting for two phone calls -

  1. from Complaints about being given incorrect information
  2. from the people who can explain what was wrong with the original transfer

Lloyds TSB are a mess!

The usual reply is that they are very sorry and they'll introduce some retraining.
