For mortgages you can have to pay of a tax statement (MIRAS).

Ah, that's more like it :-)
Ta.
ISTR that you can request a tax certificate (electronic) from Cahoot during a time window after the end of the tax year (but not immediately after, their computer seems to need weeks to do the adding up). I believe it appears as an option on the account management page.
Presumably "of" is code for "for", but what's MIRAS?
That's a rhetorical question, by the way, I know fine what it is, but your use of the present tense makes it sound as though it still existed.

Right. I'm not sure they do so.
Thanks for pointing that out to me. I must confess I'd never noticed that, not even the link to the interest and tax deduction summary that comes up first but which isn't strictly a certificate.
That certainly neutralises my concerns about complying with Self Assessment, but I still maintain that their disappearing statements system is a c*ck-up.
Actually I didn't know what it was (too young), but it is still the name used by mortgage Cos for the statement that gives the actual interest paid (necessary for tax return with BTL). Personally I get the Mortage Co to read me the interest payments over the phone and compare with my own calculations... if Hector complains I suppose I might have to pay up for a proper statement.
What I find irriating, and have pointed out to them, is that their statements come divided into pages with very few lines. So, to print them out, you could have to print out quite a few pages. Quite apart from the cost in paper and ink, this is pretty naff. What I do is to download the source of the pages, and stitch them together - never actually print them out, anyway.
The 5 charge for a hard copy has become a big issue, between me and Paypal.. They've frozen a large sum of my money and insist that I send them almost all the details which an identity thief would just love to get their hands on - by FAX. A Fax of a statement is required, but it must be a paper copy sent by Cahoot. Quite apart from the 5, I'm not going to send them all this data by FAX, which I regard as an insecure medium - where is all the
256 bit encryption, for a start - plus they'd have to print it all out for anyone to see. But, that is a bit off-topic. :-)GPG
