cheque check.

Hello all. I have been given a cheque by my granny in law. She has signed it vertically over the amount in writing (crossed cheque???) as well as in the usual bottom right place. Anyway, she says I can present it to her bank and they will give me cash straight away, rather than wait 5 days at my bank. Is this true or will I look like a wally in her bank

"Opening" a crossed cheque like this used to be possible. No doubt John Boyle can confirm its current effectiveness.

Or just telephone her bank and ask?

That way he will only sound like a wally, not look like one. :-)

they might decide to phone Granny in law to confirm whether it is ok to pay out or not or they may say sorry we don't know you and the cheque will have to go through your account. Eric

The words "please pay cash" can be added with the signature to make things clearer.
