Citibank - complete w*****s ??

I've been wondering why I have not been receiving cheque books...

I left numerous messages via their online banking function, with no reply. Eventually I decided to waste half an hour holding on the phone and was told this amazing fact:

They keep track of all unused cheques, and when the number exceed seven they stop automatic mailing of cheque books. But they don't tell you they have done it.

It turned out that I had not used eleven cheques since 1999 - hardly suprising as some get spoilt during writing, etc.

The man gave me a list of all of them, cheque numbers and all.

It's a bit like their automatic cancellation of overdraft facilities every three years. They withdraw it without notice, and anything you do (cheques, direct debits, etc) bounces. No notice given to the customer either. I phoned them up when this happened (about 2 years ago) and they told me they are entitled to do it. They had no reason for doing it that related to me; I had never done anything "naughty" - it was just something programmed in their system.

Time to move on I think. Who offers a VISA card with a 10k limit, and a current account with a 10k OD facility, and isn't staffed by robots? I used First Direct previously but their customer service went down the pan too.

Have you thought about using one of the smaller "private" banks? They normally charge if you don't maintain a high balance, but my guess is that you would get very personal service when you have to deal with them. They issue very fancy looking cheques with lots of italic writing on them judging by some of the cheques we get from well heeled or titled clients!

I have looked at Cater Allen so far. They used to be in Jersey but they handle all their UK ("not offshore") clients from some place in Liverpool or something like that...

I had my business account with them since they took over Flemings Bank who I started with. They were OK but really no more (or less) efficient than anyone else. When they started charging for the account I moved to Abbey National Business who are just as good (a little better maybe) and don't charge anything, in fact they pay my business some interest.

Cater Allen are owned by Abbey National, silly isn't it!

I too was thinking about Cater Allen - mainly for a Euro Business Account and a Euro Visa Debit Card.

Any other players in this field?

FD are the best.

I wouldn't use First Direct because their recent TV adverts were the most irritating I have seen for quite some time (cars adverts excepted, of course).

I would also avoid Halifax and Spitfire Beer for the same reason.

Does anyone else avoid doing business with companies for "artistic" reasons like this? Or is it just me?

Been with First Direct almost from the start (1991) after transferring from ShatWest after years of crap service.

Never looked back. Super service, telephone answered very quickly, internet service adequate (cannot delete bill payments, they just vanish after a year if not used).

9.9/10

I do agree that Citibank (Shittybank) are, well, shit!

Actually, you can simply send them an electronic message from internet banking telling them which bill payment you'd like deleted, and they'll happily remove it before the 12 months are up ...

Well they can change the name from "Blah Blah PLC" to ""DO NOT USE PLC" but not delete it completely. At least, that was the situation 6 months ago.

A thing I find annoying about FD is the amount of crap (those annoying black and white phamplets) they put through your letterbox promoting things like insurance and their offset mortgage (particularly annoying).

That's funny - it was a little over 6 months ago that they told me that they

*could* delete them!!

Only come with the statements.

I have their "smartmortgage", now almost fully offset with 0% credit card deals. Let the credit card companies pay my mortgage interest for me!

It's amazing how little choice there appears to be...
