Credit Card limit and paying over it

I have a Credit Card with a limit of 500.00p for example. I was wondering will the CC issuer allow me to pay 50 extra so my limit will be 550.00p?

What did they say when you asked them? You *have* asked them, haven't you?!

I would imagine that you'll still have a 500 limit but will be in credit by

  1. If you then spend 550, you'll be zero on the account.

What's the problem? Or are you suggesting that a single payment of, say, 50 over the limit will increase the limit forever?

The problem would be that some credit card providers now say (in their T&C) that they'll return any overpayments to the cardholder, rather than creating an "in credit" balance...

Some time ago, I needed to purchase an item for an amount higher than my credit limit. I asked Nationwide if I could pay into my account to put it into credit and then make the purchase. They specifically told me that they do not allow credit balances on credit card accounts, and even if my account did somehow get into credit they would not authorise any transaction for an amount higher than my assigned credit limit.

The advise given to the original poster to ask his bank seems to be the best as each one may have different policies on this.
