Hi. Returning to UK soon....So, anyone got any views on the Tesco/Sainsbury bank accounts? I'm looking for a current account, preferably with cheque book, but must have an ATM card. TIA, Paul

Tesco/Sainsbury
Not wanting to throw a spanner in the works or anything but neither Tesco nor Sainsburys offer a current account, their Credit Cards and Savings Accounts can only be accessed via another outside bank account.
If you're looking to "escape" from the high street banks, top suggestion at the moment seems to be First Direct, they are apparantly the UK's most recommended bank and I've never had, or heard of anyone having, any trouble with them at all. Also have a great E-Savings Account (5%) and will give you £25 when you open an account online. (plus can pay in cash and cheques + make withdrawls from HSBC branches)

Not convinced savings account is great, 'If any withdrawals are made in a calendar month, no interest will be paid for that month.'; see

Bit like Premium Bonds then, in that respect.. Doesn't seem to stop many millions of those being sold all the time...

Thats not the same at all.
If you encash one premium bond out of a holding of £10,000 you still have 9,999 chances.
but if you have £10k in FD e-savings account and withdraw £1, you will get no interest on the remaining £9,999
