Dell UK

I have a Dell dimension desktop pc which I purchased with a 3 year next working day service agreement. Recently when I went to move the pc the front panal came loose and wouldn't reattach as the connecting clips have broke.

After contacting dell (always an Indian call centre) and explaining what happened they told me that moving the system invalidates the service agreement, totally absurd I know. I have decided to take them to court over this but the only address that I can find is located in Ireland. Does the small claims court in the UK cover claims in Ireland?

Below is the reply I received from dell:

If you have defective goods. ie they fall apart when you try to move them, then surely they have a responsibility under SOGA. The warrenty excludes such items because they are covered by law doesn't it?

Course it's worth it you don't wan't these companys to get away with anything...

Get away with what exactly, I suppose the clips broke all by themselves? This is why we have things called wear and tear.

I'd say not to waste your money on the small claims court as you'd lose.

It depends how he moved it. If he tried to move it by pulling the front cover, thats his problem, in the same way if you tried to move your car by pulling on the aerial and it broke. Buy some velcro for a couple of quid and get over it JB!

Buy a new one, take the broken one apart, leave the bits lying around, and impress your friends by saying: "I'm building a more powerful machine next".

Sounds like it was your fault as you picked it up the wrong way. If you left it alone it wouldn't have broken. You could claim via your contents insurance if you have accidental damage on your insurance.

You are talking about the front panel that lifts up to access the USB ports and the headphone socket, right? Are you sure the connecting clips have broken, and not simply detached? The front panel comes off easily to avoid damage, and it is in the manual how to re-fit it. if you no longer have the manual, look in the online version.

The warranty cost 100 and has 22months to run. The replacement part is quoted as 78 delivered so why should I pay 78 when I have a warranty that I paid good money for?

My point exactly, now they are saying the damage was customer induced!!!

No the front panel is an all in one with ports for the writers/rom, floppy and usb ports.

Ah OK, so, different from mine. Mine has a flap at the bottom that lifts up and drops down to cover the connections to the USB ports, etc. Dimension

8300 I think.

because the warranty you paid for, and the cost of it is irrelevant, doesnt cover accidental damage? Spend a fiver on velcro.

Just spent 4.99 on velcro. Whilst opening containing carton of said velcro I let it slip from my hands into wet patch on floor thus making velcro useless.

Complained to manufacturers of the velcro who told me that I have no reason for complaint as it was customer induced. If I hadn't touched the velcro it wouldn't have got wet and therefore served it's purpose.

Was advised on this group that I should have taken out accidental damage warranty for the velcro but me thinks next time I'll just buy waterproof velcro.

Velcro isn't like sticky tape. Wetness doesn't make it useless.

Had you spent the extra penny, *as I advised*, it would have been the waterproof variety. Live and learn.

You could try suiing yourself, in the small claims court, for leaving the wet patch in the first place. I bet you never put one of those pyramidal bright yellow 'danger slippery floor' signs up either, thus breaking Euro directive 34772/A/5536/7.3, so i think it would be a slam dunk case.

I didnt know Velcro became useless if it gets wet. I've used it underwater, (scuba diving), and it seems to work fine, even though the box said dont get it wet.
