Ages ago I got some information for (I think) a Birmingham Midshires (sp?) account to be opened through the post (building society).

They asked for about four forms of original ID (such as passport, driving license) which seemed absurd.

I know they have to comply with the law, but this seemed excessive. How do they hope to get new customers?

Money Laundering Regs. I think its 3 pieces they need. 2 for address and 1 with name if it is postal.(if it is a Current account,a nd you are not on the electoral roll may require more)

Not their fault. All lenders would/should be the same.

It must have been ages ago if it was still a Building Society.

They would dearly love not to have to go to such ridiculous lengths but Money Laundering rules are very strict. RBS got fined £100ks earlier this year.

What did RBS do or not do to get this fine?

They were not as fastidious about collecting ID as Birmingham Midshires appear to be.
