What he seems to be getting at is that he thinks he has evidence not of actual fraud, but of a bank failing to take measures to prevent it, i.e. failing to carry out ML checks properly, and is wanting to drop the bank "in it".

What this would achieve, of course, is anybody's guess.

Badly worded when I first made my point, I do not want to drop anybody in it. Want I have thought is reporting to somebody senior that this has happened. It may be perfectly innocent, but who has a passport with an incorrect spelling and doesn't correct it? and then gets a driving licence in the same name, yet has utility bills in another spelling? Doesn't sound kosher to me

Not sure what you mean by "correct it". The new-style passports are physically impossible to amend because of the plastic coating, so you'd have to send it back to the passport office and ask them to re-issue it.

Fair enough, it *could* be an attempt at funny-business, possibly to establish a false address, but really if you're going to assume an alternative identity it would be better to use one that's properly different.

There again, it could be perfectly innocent. Between my late dad's driving licence and mine, and our passports, there are three different spellings of our surname.

Common problem for me to have my first name spelt differently on everything. It was hyphenated until I had it changed. You'd be surprised how many places can't seem to accommodate a hyphen/understand what one is/put the two parts of the name the wrong way around/insist on only using the part of the name before the hyphen. Consequently, I spent many years faffing around with producing supplemetary evidence as to my name or trying to only use my initials wherever possible.

That makes what I overheard all the more amazing. The bank employee found that her understanding of the problem was wrong, yet happily accepted the wrong id to continue the process. With you they always double checked for errors.

I wasn't proposing that they write on it with a biro, of course I meant send it back to the passport office for correction.

You can have two copies of your passport. Also very handy if you visit both Israel and any Arab country.

I've seen some at 700 a month for 4 bed detached in Lytham area. If you want to settle for 450 a month, 2 or 3 bed houses are available in decent areas.

You are missing the point. You apply for passport, it arrives with wrong name. You send back. Wheres the problem?

Isn't it obvious? You apply for passport, in good time for a planned trip. It arrives with wrong name. There isn't enough time to get it fixed without jeopardising the trip. You can't just "make time". The obvious thing to do is to keep it and use it for the trip despite the name being wrong. Then, after your return, when you don't need it for a while, you can send it back for correction (having in the meantime used it to open bank accounts in a "false" name). :-)
