Anyone have any good recommendation for £50K 1 or 2 year fixed interest account please?
Phoned HSBC (with security in mind) but 4.95% for 1 year doesn't seem very attractive.
Bradford & Bingley are a possibility. What's their current status please, I've lost track?

Check Nationwide - as I remember they were offering 6.5% on fixed term bonds.

Bradford & Bingley are now part of Santander - Spain's largest bank. Very sound now - and deposits covered by the FSCS (UK) up to £50k.

Anglo Irish - 7%. 100% guaranteed by the Irish Government. You can decide for yourself wether or not you think a guarantee from the Irish Government is worth anything. There is a higher than average chance you might need it.
State Bank of India - also 7% on balances of £10k or more. Covered by UK scheme.
Raphaels Bank - 6.8%. Also covered by UK scheme. Best known for their sub-prime Monument credit card.
Royal Bank of Scotland/Natwest - 6.6% on £10k or more. Majority owned by the government. Very unlikely you will lose any money with them. You can put £50k in each of them as they have separate FSA registrations.
Bradford & Bingley are now part of Abbey. It is very unlikely you will lose money with them.
