Halifax

Anyone know what charges Halifax make for using maestro abroad (Europe). Cant find any info on their crap website. (ie loading charges and % deduction from Interbank rate)

Someone, somewhere at Halifax is sure to know.

My guess is that there wont be a fixed charge and the exchange rate will be the "normal bank exchange rate" which is much better than you'd get at a bureau de change. If you use it in a cash machine there could be a small extra charge.

My experience of trying to find someone who can answer such difficult technical questions (!) is that the easiest way to get an answer would be to use the card and see what happens.

I don't know whether to use the cc which I know is 2.65% or the maestro which is a big unknown. For ATM's the maestro will probably be cheaper.

The credit card will probably have the usual cash advance fee and interest from the date of withdrawal, as with ATM transactions in the UK.

My experience of Halifax is that it is extremely difficult to even find somebody who can answer even basic questions or complete basic tasks without making errors.

Recently they had to issue the same cheque SIX times to me, making five mistakes that included spelling my name wrong (twice) and getting the amount wrong (three times).

You pay both ;-)

I agree horribly difficult to find (I wonder why ... terms are not exactly attractive!). I knew I'd seen it before so I persisted.

"Charges for using your card abroad

If you use your card abroad, the amount of the transaction will be changed to pounds sterling on the date we take it out of your account. This may not be the same date that the transaction is carried out. We'll choose the exchange rate that applies and we'll include a conversion fee of 2.25% of the amount of the transaction. We will also deduct a service charge of 1.50 from your account immediately for each transaction."

Last time I looked Nationwide was the best. Anyone know differrent?
