I get about 1 spam month and it's been a long time since I received a phish, but then again the address was seeded once in June 2006, so perhaps that's the difference.

Oooh! Tumbleweed, aren't you a clever boy.

You post to this NG to tells us you have inadequate virus protection on your PC.

My, how I look up to you.

I've found that installing McAfee SiteAdvisor intercepts the page (As in this case) if I inadvertently click on a dodgy link:

It's free & v. highly rated.

since when did a virus checker on your PC stop spam entering your mailbox on someone else's server?

I suppose I meant spam. One of the ones I use come as a complete bundle.

I think you know what I meant.

Did you mean *from* someone else's server?

Easier just to delete these emails without even opening them. In fact I'm rather astonished anyone with a clue does.

I did say inadvertently.

I always look. And put the mail relay that sent it into a block list. And sometimes forward to the bank's phisheries protection.

(But I should add that the mailer I use, Pegasus, has it's own secure html renderer, and warns about weird links; so it's pretty safe to do this.)

BTW the subject is rather misleading :-)

Its more the case your post shows you dont have a clue about what virus protection does.

you'd be better occupied looking up 'PC virus' in a dictionary.

I get my spam filtered out, you don't. .

So do I..... just because I said that I get several a week doesnt mean that they arent filtered out* :-)

  • I do of course occasionally look at my junk mail folder to check for false positives which is how I know I get them, before you ask.

No

Letting in a virus might be dangerous, letting in spam is just time wasting.

No. My mail is collected on a server in someone else building. By the time it is downloaded to my machine it has already gone pase the spam checking process (but is yet to reach MY virus checking process).

I like to keep an eye on where they are hosted. Hotmail automatically treated the email as 'unsafe' so opening it does no harm. I'm confident of my firewall, virus and spyware detection (AVG, Spybot & AdAware) so even so I don't believe accessing the website would do me any harm, any more than accessing any other website.
