help wanted re: credit debts....eg alternate options

I have managed to accrue credit card debts of 28,000. I am now using a company that offers free help in negotiating the lowest possible monthly repayments. I have set up a standing order to this company to pay back these banks BUT it knocks a huge gap out of my salary.

I would like to know if there is any financial organisation or method that might help me to get rid of these debts more quickly; a way round the system if you like.

I'd appreciate any advice, know how, connections etc.

If you are being threatened by legal action, then remember that under the

1998 Data Protection Act you have the power to take some inexpensive legal action of your own by issuing a letter (called a Subject Access Rights Notice). Use it to get full details of the records held about you, and to establish the precise basis of any claim. Also bear in mind that you may be able to dispute this claim based on such information. Details of how to do this are given at

Finally, try not to let this problem take over your life. You are at the present time in good company. See:

Have you spoken to your local CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau)?

You don't make it clear whether you're defaulting or not, i.e. are you actually paying everything due? And have you defaulted in the past, i.e. what's your credit record like? Also, do you have a mortgage? If so, the cheapest solution is probably to extend it to pay off the other stuff - but you could lose your house if you default on that. Also there are lots of credit cards offering 0% interest for six months or more, but you won't get one if your credit record is shot (and you would need willpower not to run up even more debt). In any case the best thing to do is to make the biggest repayments you possibly can as soon as you can.
