Storing Edited Descriptions / Item Comments

In a previous thread (Questions about RMS, need help. - November 2nd,

2005), someone wanted to include edited descriptions in a report. Glenn mentioned that turning on "Record Item Comments" might also save the edited descriptions, but as far as I can tell - it does not. The only way any changes are saved (other than in the journaled receipt) is to use Item Comments.

We have some items that are set as non-stocked, ask for price at POS, and have a generic description - when the item is rung up, the cashier is forced to enter the price and goes back and edits the description to reflect the item being sold. We then need to report on this data, but as far as I can tell - there is no way (without customization) to pull the edited description from any current table.

Instead of editing the description, we can start making them do Ctrl-F10 to store a comment (which still shows on the screen), and then the receipt can be modified - but this isn't the optimal solution. Has anyone found any options (or seen any addons) that will force an item comment (so that the cashier will be forced to enter the price and description (which will get stored in the Comment field of TransactionEntry))? Or has anyone found a way to save the edited Description (or seen an addon that does this?)

Thanks, Jared

After working on it for a bit, I was able to make some progress. I was able to use status.htm to check if the current item needs a comment, and if so - to prompt for one. However, this requires that the cashier enter the item, then arrow up to select the item to see the comment box

- I'd prefer to have the comment box automatically appear. Is there any way (using status.htm) to press the UP arrow automatically? (I've tried sendkeys, but it doesn't seem to work - probably because I haven't set the key to go to the grid window.) Any suggestions?

Jared,

I think that I am trying to get a similar problem solved. I have a furniture retail store and when we do a custom order from one of our chair companies we need to add comments to just that line item for the fabric being selected. Since this company offers us over 300 different patters and they discontinue and update these patterns year round. So it would be very time consuming to enter these fabrics into the computer. So we just have the chair model numbers in the computer. Once the right chair is selected we just add a comment to the line that the chair is on with the fabric that needs to be ordered on it. I know there is a comments field under details that will print at the top of the receipt that will always show, however we use that field for other information. The first printed off receipt looks great and shows the comments you typed per item. But when you go back into the Layaway or Order the comments per line are gone. I just need a way to have these comments saved per line so that if we need to print out another receipt it will have that information on it. Thank you for any help.
