I was looking for mortgages and came across a site via google , that quoted deals from 1.8 % ?!?!?!!??!

I was looking for mortgages and came across a site via google , that quoted deals from 1.8 % for remortgages?!?!?!!??! now that sounds very cheap , i guess its a get you signed up to there mailing list type place , but it has a 0845 number also......i would'nt print the link for fear of been accused of been a spammer.....

but if you goto google and type in mortgage , its right at the top of the search.......

I don't know about this particular site, but I have seen deals like that in the past - you get a ridiculously low rate for an short introductory period (e.g two years) then a not very good rate for the next 23 years with some significant fees for switching to another mortgage. I.e. pay less now, pay a lot more later.

It is explained in the small print

1.80% fixed until 31/01/2009; changing to standard variable rate for the rest of the term, currently 6.82%. The overall cost for comparison is 6.4% APR. An arrangement fee of £445. Early Repayment Charge for 6 years until 31/01/2013. Rates correct as of 11th December 2006.

6.82% is pretty expensive. Moneysupermarket has quite a few in the 5.2% -

5.2% range with no redemption penalties etc.
