Literality

'Lord Adebowale, chief executive of charity Turning Point, called for more money to be spent on alcohol treatment, education and social care.

"We are talking about families dissolving in a sea of alcohol," he told the BBC. '

When I first saw it it had the word "literally" after "families" ... I sometimes wonder if journalists ever try reading what they write! At least they eventually changed it ... although if it was really a quote perhaps they shouldn't. I also liked the report which started something like "you can't tell what a hurricane is like from its name" ...

Hmmm, alcohol has that effect on vision ;)

Seriously it is indeed a cultural thing that our society would benefit from coming to grips with. A lot of people think a fairly good night out ends with a hangover the next day while a really good one includes vomiting on the way home.

Sounds a lovely way to go..... (reminds me of the French chefs who can't understand the fuss from foreigners when they drown birds in cognac in preparation for cooking)

I've heard similar instances from anyone from over excited interviewees desperate to get a point across to gobshite presenters.

Absolutely not imo.
