Mortgages For Overseas Properties

Mar 03, 2004 2 Replies

I'm starting to think about buying an apartment in a ski resort late this year, or early next. I've been into all the local estate agents to speak to their mortgage advisors, but none have any idea about mortgages for foreign properties. I've also had a good Google, but have only turned up affiliate sites, and no really useful information. Can anyone recommend where I could look to find out more about applying for a mortgage for an overseas property?

More specifically, I'm trying to find out what lenders will do this for me, whether interest rates are generally higher, and whether I'm likely to need a larger deposit. Also, any information on what other expenses are involved in foreign house purchases would be useful. I'd like a place in Austria, but this all depends on which country will suit best financially. Any pointers appreciated.

Cheers, Andy

Have you got any spare equity in your present property - if you have one. If so, you could maybe raise extra cash from that and buy the overseas property for cash.

I've got equity in a flat and house, but don't have enough to remortgage for that amount (besides, I have an extremely good deal). I will need a mortgage, unless I sell my flat.
