New style switch cards

Natwest have just sent me a new switch card as the old one has expired. It only has 16 digits on it compared with the old one that had 19 (made up of the card type + sort code + account number + check digit). Also it doesn't have an issue number. Is this valid as they always ask you for the isse number when you use switch? In fact the e-commerce site I wrote for the company I work for will not accept switch without an issue number.

Yep - this should be accepted by all ecommerce sites. Many now require the security number from the back of the card instead of an issue number. Some olders sites will need something to be input for the issue number - IIRC, if you use 0 the query to the bank for the funds will recognise this as null - the site will be happy and so will the bank.

When I say that my card is issued by Bank of Scotland, they don't ask for the issue number - so, it's pretty normal not to have one.

OT: Do you discriminate visitors on the browser type as well? I saw lots of web sites screaming that my Opera browser is not supported, some even insist on me using windows -- I never visit them again.

Ignorance on my part I'm afraid because I thought all switch cards had issue numbers. I will definitely correct this though.

OT: I try not to discriminate against browsers. Although the site was designed on IE, I spent about a week modifying it to work on netscape and opera. Most of this time was spent removing the neat little shortcuts IE allows in it's JavaScript and replacing it with more 'standard' script. It will work on Opera so long as you have a newer version that allows dynamic reformatiing (where sections of the page can be shown/hidden from script and the text is reformatted)

How sites process it depend on their merchant services. I know that we need all RBS (and hence Natwest) cards to be entered with NO issue number (not even 0) otherwise it will be declined. Some sites do require 0 however. Best to suck it and see.

In that case you may have lost your clients business - many Switch cards do not have an issue number and use a start date as well as the expiry date.
