Nomore Mr Nice Guy - Abbey

Just rec'd latest bank statement from Abbey, which included a notice about the change in bank charges from the 9 October 2005. The charges for unpaid direct debits/standing orders and cheques is increasing from 32 to 35 per transactions and there is now a charge for going overdrawn without authorisation of 20 - this is currently free (although I think there is currently a limit of going overdrawn without authorisation and not being charged - 50 I think).

And all this at a time when credit card companies are being told that their charges are too high:

Perhaps the OFT should be looking at banks too.

If you do not go overdrawn without permission or over an authorised limit, again no charge! Eric

Very droll. My point was that Abbey were the bank who was turning banking on its head (their line not mine). Now they just seem to be throwing the baby out with the bath water. It's amazing what a change in ownership does for you - and what people may forget - all the profits from these new bank charges won't be lining the pockets of British shareholders. They will be sent to line the pocket of our Iberian friends.

And my point is that you can use the banks to YOUR advantage without paying a penny. Just follow a few simple rules. Eric

Talk about teaching granny to suck eggs.

Anyway, it's bye bye Abbey, hello Nationwide. I've just applied online and been accepted for Flex account. At in the future I won't have to talk to those ever so polite but sickening "can I do anything else for you, Sir" Indian call centres who transfer you back to the UK at the slightest hint that what you're asking is anything more than "how much have I got in my account today, and have I got enough to buy an elephant" type questions.

And do you think it is all going to be honey and roses with your new bank ???

Its sort like booking a flightwith BA in August then being ever so supprised when they go on strike!

Probably not, but at least I'm keeping my money, my business and my personal data British. And when I'm not (i.e., taking money out from an overseas ATM), I won't be charged an extortionate fee for doing so.

Nationwide isn't a bank.

Oh, and BA or somebody that they rely on, always go on strike in August, so why book then? Plus when you get there the place is full of other people's screaming kids. May as well slit your wrists before you get on the plane, if it's not on strike that is.
