OT - Team Building Exercises

Hi all. Pardon me for going off topic. Our department recently took part in a "Team Building" event/exercise. Basically, it consisted of a mini-team event type quiz. Followed by a long period of using lego to illustrate/analyze various department concepts. I've got no great issue with the event itself. But today I discovered that our 2 'project managers' held a private meeting that they described as a 'Debreifing'. The rest of the department returned to work next day and since then there has been no sort of special meeting for us plebs who took part in the event to give them a chance to discuss their experience....or to use the lingo...'go forward' etc.

To me this looks like the team building exercise was held for the benefit of the dept managers rather than as an exercise for all the department staff.

Am I being fair?

Thanks for your time.

Of course you are. As a pleb, you have no team to build.

These exercises are all a complete waste of time and effort, and make no difference whatsoever to anyone, as will be obvious in 3 months time. If you enjoyed it and were well fed, fine. But why do you want the pointlessness of a follow-up? Put it behind you, and don't be conned into thinking it was important.

As I said, I have no issue with the event itself but I should have said that I had no illusions about it would achieve anything useful at the end of the day. But if I am right it will give me an opportunity to give the project managers a 'sore arse' some time in the near future. :)

How would you go about doing that, then?

I shall raise the subject at a dept meeting if it suits me to do so.

Thier self satisfaction forms the skin on their rear ends.

I think you're over analysing this.

The Lego sounds fun though.

i hope that the rest of the staff are not as negative, if they are there is no team to build and the company are banging their heads against a wall

I may be a cynical old shit, but it sounds to me as if the 'project managers' were assessing the participants for who they want onboard moving forward.

Most of us have been members at least 12 years. 18 years on my record. Its difficult to be positive when you've been somewhere that long.

Yup, sounds reasonable. If I was a manager and knew that either: a.) shitty times were ahead, or b.) I was going to have to axe some of my staff because of (a) I'd probably try to work out which were the ones who were compliant and wouldn't cause trouble. Once I know who can be manipulated, sorry; motivated, then I'd sack the rest and have the smaller team doing all their extra work. Hopefully without much complaint.

good luck with your new company.
