pay rises/bonuses

i'm curious, are they actually increases due to inflation? i.e. incomes had to increase anyway due to inflation but these are 'marketed' as bonuses/ pay rise as if the employer took pity on its staff.

Pay rises may or may not be linked to inflation - depends on the employer. Most employers, I suggest would not be silly enough to make this link. What happens if the firm hits a bad spell and still pays a pay rise and then goes bust? Who's the gainer here? A lot of people think they should get inflation-linked rises, but they are living on this planet. Years ago (before Maggie Thatcher) unions ruled the roost and would call their members out on strike if they didn't get a suitable rise (whether the firm was able to afford it or not). Not so many of these firms around now.

so it is not a 'real' pay rise if it is indeed linked to inflation ? and employees left wondering why their boss is suddenly so generous...
