Public liability insurance for International work

Dear all, I wonder if anybody has experience with insurance (public liability and professional imdemnity) that covers work outside the UK.

  • I work as a software consultant.
  • I work through my own UK based company (Limited).
  • My clients are based in the USA, Switzerland and UK.
  • Contracts with my clients stipulate that I get public liability insurance. The jurisdiction of the contracts is typically in the country of my client.

Some questions I have:

- Does anybody know of an affordable public liability insurance that covers abroad? What should be the rough cost for this for a single person IT outfit?

- What about professional imdemnity. Is there something that covers the US, or does that become too expensive?

Any answers or pointers would be appreciated,

Jorg

You can get PI and PL insurances for the US, but it does tend to be much more expensive.

My advice would be to go through a broker, especially a Lloyd's broker, as the Lloyd's market specialises in this kind of thing.

I know two Lloyd's Underwriters from an insurance company I did some consultancy for: Nigel Dorning for PI and Tim Wilmshurst for PL. Both can be contacted on 01245 396 396, but they will probably tell you to go through a broker.

I had that when I worked in France and got it through one of the normal high street brokers, MAIF or somesuch, cost a few quid. If you are renting a house you can get it as an extension to the house insurance to cover your professional needs. As I understand it it is to cover you if you are the cause of some accident at the client's workplace not to cover shoddy software.
