Why? Are they any more likely to be better than using a pin?

I agree, and I do take it with a huge pinch of salt, but nonetheless if most people do take the broker recommendation on board then the price will rise simply as a result of supply and demand.
Are you talking about newspapers or brokers?
Not if they take the recommendation on board in such a way to reflect the crookedness or incompetence of most City people.
I've got a newspaper cutting somewhere of an article where some people who wrote the city pages admitted that they basically had no clue about the shares they tipped, they just picked something they'd heard some vaguely good news about.
And this year's recommendation is ...
Marconi again!!
