tax return form

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good online guide for filling in the various parts of the self-assessment tax return form? The form itself refers to a guide which is clearly different from the one that the tax office sent me (SA151W) as it talks about pages and sections that don't exist.

A basic explanation of each of the questions asked on the form would suffice as I have a reasonably good grasp of tax issues and just need to be sure that there's not something that I've overlooked.

i.e. I don't need advice, just black & white explanations.

cheers, RM

The guides for all the sections are on the Inland Revenue web site.

There are two versions. In addition to SA151W (16 pages), there is also the more "comprehensive" SA151C (34 pages).

The guides change each year as do the forms themselves. Check to make sure it says on page 1 "for the year ended 5 April 2004".

If they've vanished from the IR website, I can email you a copy.

Yup...it's the shorter one that I was provided with but the SA form always refers to the longer one - someone really should have thought this through when designing the form.

Why are there two versions of this guide anyway?

Cheers - will look into it.

The comprehensive one goes into more detail than most people need. :-)

Actually, I've had a quick look at the form and can't see it referring to SA151C anywhere, though there are a couple of places where it does mention SA151W. Note, the two SA151s are tax *calculation* guides.

I think what you're after is the basic Tax Return Guide, which is a "How to fill in ..." and is called SA150 (35 pages). You should have been sent this together with the tax return itself, which is SA100 (12 pages).

Nope - I just have SA151W and e.g. next to box 12.3 on SA100 it says "read pages 15-18 of your Tax Return Guide" which, despite not explicitly mentioning SA151C, clearly refers to a guide other than the SA151W that I have as it only has 16 pages in total. (One of many such identical reference to "your Tax Return Guide" that I can only assume refer to the same document which I don't currently have)

Therein lies my problem...

Anyway, thanks for the info regarding the exact document numbers as, armed with this info, I'm sure I can now easily hunt down the info I need on the inland revenue site. It's just one of those annoying situations where you know enough to believe that an accountant is an unnecessary extravagance but just too little to know how to fill in the damned form appropriately.

I recommend you invest £25 on Taxcalc which you can buy and download immediately from

I've used this for 4 years now and it's just brilliant. Best £25 I've ever spent. I've this evening sat down, downloaded it, installed it, completed my tax return and filed it by Internet in about an hour. The software includes (independent) explanations of each of the fields, in-situ, and also includes links to PDF copies of all the IR help documents in context.
