If I want to transfer money to another person's account using HSBC's internet banking they will charge me £20 for a CHAPS transfer. However, I've noticed that standing orders are completely free of charge.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't set up the transfer as a standing order and just cancel it after the first payment has gone through? I realise that the standing order would take a few days rather than the immediate payment that CHAPS would give, but is there any other downside to doing it this way?
