Vat cut

The same as the TV news shows implying that the recent drop in inflation meant that prices were dropping. Whereas what has dropped is the rate that the prices are increasing.

I currently use Access Accounting, MYOB, QuickBooks, Sage and MS Office Accounting. It will be interesting to see how these "systems" have to be changed.

Bearing in mind that shoppers are not exactly flocking into the shops even when there are sales offering 20% off - I can't see that a minor change in VAT is going to open the floodgates!

This shows Labour's lack of understanding of people. If people feel poor or there's a poor economic climate people will spend on necessities, pay off debts and save in that order.

I think the long term priority of government is to get people to treat housing as a necessity and not an investment along with discouraging borrowing by consumers.

I can see the local shop keepers rushing out now to change their prices from £2.99 to £2.93! And will Iceland have to re-shoot that "Oooonly a PoWnd" advert?

I can see it being noticeable in petrol/diesel prices, but not a lot else. Of course if I owned a retail business it might improve my margins.

To disengage the housing market from the economy would be an essential step. Some developer was bleating on about how essential it was to build more housing and eventually choked on the word affordable. Affordable housing needs to be genuinely affordable. None of the tiny discounts on silly 2 bed showbox flats. Many of these would not meet the requirements of housing associations due to poor size and construction.

Poundshop'll be hit with a dilemma.

No it wasn't. The RPI dropped from 218.4 in Sept to 217.7 in Oct ; that's a reduction in prices from one month to the next, but year on year it is still an increase.

I rather hope that it's going to have a noticeable effect on the price of a car

I think the rebranding to the '97.9p' shop is inspirational. It might cost 'em a few quid changing though!

Nope, Darling thought of that... Fuel duty adjusted to compensate...

Not really, the VAT reduction will just mean that they can start stocking some goods that they couldn't afford to at the higher VAT rate.

Or if they were planning on reducing the 20 biros for a pound (made that up - no idea if it's reasonable) to 19 biros for a pound, they might now be able to maintain that at 20 biros for a pound.
