Where in the world for 200,000?

Oct 01, 2008 9 Replies

Here's an off the wall question.

If someone could realise 200,000 by liquidating all their assets, are there any nice places in the world where they could live off the income from this in reasonable comfort? Not in 5 star luxury, but still able to enjoy treats such as dining in local restaurants.

Countries with rampant crime, terrorism, civil war, disease, crashing economies, stratospheric inflation or that are hostile to Westerners need not apply! Warm climate and beaches preferred.

I suppose this is assuming no safety net is kept in the UK, unless doing this would still deliver the required income.

Any ideas?

On the not ureasonable assumption that you can get a return on that sum, after tax, that approximates to the rate of inflation, it's more a question of how long the capital will last. So, what you have to do first is decide how long you're going to live and divide that into the lump sum.

If it's 10 years, say, you can afford to spend £20K a year at current values. That might be sufficent to live and stay somewhere cheapish, ie third world, possibly India, Vietnam, China, Panama, Gambia, possibly S Africa or Spain even. If it's 5 years, you can afford £40K a year, which would probably take you to most places in some comfort.

If you're going to live more than 10 years, go back to work and earn some more money. If it's less than 5, just go, anywhere, before it's too late.

I know someone who rented her house out while travelling round SE Asia for a couple of years (IIRC mainly Thailand, Malaysia & Indonesia), and she reckoned the rent plus savings in household bills was enough to pay for the entire trip!

I have no personal experience, but I understand that Belize is a cheap place to live and sufficiently "British" for you not to have too many difficulties settling in

Gosh, 20K a year sounds a lot for India based on the information I've seen. I'm sure I've read about well educated Indians leaving professions (e.g. trainee doctors) to work in call centres for the equivalent of 4K a year as it's considered to be a good salary. Maybe this is really out of date?

Perhaps another way of phrasing the question would be "Where in the world can you live comfortably for under 10K a year?".

That's certainly tempting, however if you substitute "Southerners" for "Westerners" does Sunderland meet any of these criteria? "Countries with rampant crime, terrorism, civil war, disease, crashing economies, stratospheric inflation or that are hostile to Westerners need not apply! Warm climate and beaches preferred."

Ah yes, Belize. Definitely sounds as though it could be worth a look. Do they still have those Harrier jump jets stationed there?

Cheers.

No, the question is really "What standard of living do you have in mind?". If you'd said 'living as the locals do', I would obviously have said less than £20K. But that would have been an easy question to answer just by a search on average world incomes, and would have been pointless or utterly lazy to ask.

What we had to go on was 'living in reasonable comfort but still able to enjoy treats such as dining in local restaurants'. That implied to me living as an ex-pat after doing a bunk with ill-gotten gains, retiring to the Costa del Crime etc.

Costa Rica would be ideal in many ways but for it's inflation rate. Derek.
