Just an idle question. Britain has been described several times on the radio as the world's



5th biggest economy. What the first four? US, Japan, Germany... and who?

Yes, according to the New York Times (January 2006) and based upon figures submitted by China:-

"The Chinese statistics, showing a national economic output of $2.26 trillion, sent China soaring past France, Britain and Italy to become the world's fourth-largest economy, after the United States, Japan and Germany."

India still have quite a way to go:
